Today is September 11th. Or more commonly known as 9/11. On this day in 2001 19 members of a terrorist organization took control of four different airplanes that left the east coast. None of these airplanes would reach their final destination. Two collided with the Twin Towers in New York city. These buildings were where the United States conducted business with a variety of domestic companies and foreign nations. These buildings were symbols of American economic strength and influence. One plane struck the Pentagon, which is where the United States maintains a high level of domestic defense and plans foreign military actions. The final airplane crash landed in a field in Pennsylvania. The passengers of this plane fought back to ensure no other government building was damaged. This airplane is thought to have been intended for the Capitol building or the Whitehouse. On that day over 3,000 people were killed. Countless more people would eventually die or suffer from the emotional distress from the events of that day in the years that followed. On this day, we would like to recognize the tragic loss of life and the sacrifice so many people gave for the protection of others. If you have any questions regarding that day please ask your teacher.
