Third Graders Attend Museum School

Aldrich 3rd Graders are at Grout Museum this week taking part in Museum School! They got to experience a Planetarium Show, learn about constellations and hear stories of Greek mythology. They also heard about the Pioneer times and checked out a log cabin, general store, and a blacksmith shop. In addition, students also learned about the three different types of fossils and dug and sorted some. And finally, students learned about Native Americans and how they survived. Very interesting!

Congratulations to Aldrich 3rd graders who ran a successful loose change campaign to raise money for the Cedar Falls Historical Society. Aldrich Girls on the Run Complete Season

Girls on the Run completed their second season at Aldrich. We had 19 girls participate this season, some new and some returning girls. This past weekend all the girls ran a 5k in Cedar Rapids and they all completed the race. That is amazing!They are already planning for the Spring season. The Spring season will start the week of February 24th and end the week of May 11th with the 5k Saturday May 9th in Iowa City.

Aldrich 5th grade classes used grant money from Project Jack to provide donations to the Waverlry Pet Rescue. Students made blankets, pet toys and homemade treatsProject Jack originated in the Quad Cities area in memory of Jack Lindaman, and it gives  4th and 5th graders the opportunity to pay it forward in any way the class chooses.Waverly Pet Rescue is a 501(c)3 pet rescue serving the Cedar Valley. Aldrich Student Council is hosting a fundraiser called Cards for a Cause during Fall Conferences. They will be selling boxed sets of 30 beautifully embellished cards with matching envelopes for $30.  Boxes come in three different themes:  All Occasion, Kid's Birthdays and Thanks and Blanks.  Aldrich Elementary School will receive $13 for every box sold. Four Aldrich Students PIcked for Opus Honor Choir

Congratulations to Sarah Timm, Chandler Taylor, Lilly Schildroth, and Caleb Rusch for being selected for the Fifth-Sixth Grade select Opus Honor Choir!  Each student learned 3 pieces of difficult music and made a recording of each song.  Over 3,000 kids in grades 5-9 audition every year, so it is tough competition. The concert is on Thursday, November 15th in Ames.

Science Olympiad Team Places at State Competition

On April 7th Holmes Junior High grabbed both the 2nd place trophy and a 5th place finish in the Iowa Science Olympiad. The contest was held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Food Drive Thank You!

Thank you for your help in the Student Leadership Council Food Drive!  As a school, we raised $379.52 and brought in 930 cans!  In the K-3 category, 3rd grade collected the most cans and money!  In the 4th-6th grade category, 4th grade brought in the most cans and 6th grade brought in the most money.  The Northeast Iowa Food Bank will appreciate all of the donations!

Lincoln Singers Audition for Opus!

Twenty seven 5th and 6th grade students auditioned for a state wide honor choir called Opus. To audition, students sang a major scale, America, and an Italian piece called La Danza (that they actually sang in Italian!). Mr. Meyer and several others went above and beyond the call of duty to set up the Tiger Kickoff for our fall athletes - of special note Stormy and Melissa gave of their own time to come back to help with the event and after the event was over at Holmes took meals to our 9th grade football players who were still practicing at Peet, our coaches who stayed around after the event to help our custodial staff clean up.  Thank you to all that helped and came.

Holmes Students Participate in All-Iowa Eighth Grade State Honor Band

Congratulations to Holmes band students Megan Smith, David Butler, Christopher Sell and Emma Cryer on their acceptance into the 2016 All-Iowa Eighth Grade State Honor Band. More than 250 students competed at the district level for one of the 22 spots from the Northeast district of Iowa. The students performed at the state convention in May, including a premiere piece written in their honor and conducted by the composer.
