How Holmes Teachers are Promoting Literacy Outside of the Classroom | Holmes Jr. High Jeans Day

Holmes Jr. High Teachers and Staff were granted the opportunity to promote literacy in the Cedar Valley and wear some comfier clothes at the same time! Teachers donated $5 to wear jeans on Friday, January 10th. Proceeds will go to Readers Today, Leaders Tomorrow, a student organization at the University of Northern Iowa.

Readers Today, Leaders Tomorrow began in 2018 when a young student at UNI learned that students who do not have access to age-appropriate reading material tend to do worse in school. Caleb Gipple, a junior majoring in Public Administration, committed to make a change for those students in the Cedar Valley.

In 2019, Gipple and company donated over 2000 books to students in four different schools in the area. This year, they have the goal of donating 2500 books to students in need. Holmes Teachers donated $120 toward that goal on Friday.

Activities such as this showcase the dedication that Holmes Teachers’ possess, not only in the classroom, but outside as well, to delivering opportunities for academic excellence to students.
