Lincoln Weekly Announcements 2020-09-11

Lincoln Families - Thank you for your continued support, we had an amazing week!

A few upcoming dates:

9.14 - PALS meeting at 7 PM (This meeting will be virtual, the information to join is below)

9.28 - School Picture Day

Safety Reminders:

Face Coverings - please remember that students will be required to have a face covering or a shield while at school. The latest guidance from Black Hawk County Public Health states that either can be worn. It also states that if a staff or student plans to work in close proximity with others and are wearing a shield, they should plan to also wear a mask underneath. We appreciate your help discussing this and practicing at home daily. Our most recent Return To Learn family frequently asked questions document can be found here.

Visitors and Volunteers - to support safety, we will not be able to allow visitors or volunteers to enter our classrooms. We would like to encourage siblings to separate at the door and younger children begin practicing walking to their rooms on their own. We will continue to have adults in the hallway to help. In addition, if you come to the building to pick up your child, you can enter the office or call and we will walk the student outside to our visitor parking spots.

Arrival And Dismissal - we are working to help our students safely enter and leave the building. In the morning, we will ask students to arrive between 8:30 and 8:45. Please do not come before 8:30. They will report to their classrooms. At the end of the day, we will dismiss students by grade to the bus. Following this, we will dismiss students who are picked up or walk home. Our staff will walk students to the door. There will be no after school activities so we will expect students to leave school immediately following dismissal. Thank you for your patience as we work to support student safety each morning and afternoon.

Lincoln FLL Challenge Application, Grades 4-6 - FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge is an organized opportunity for 4th-6th grade students to work with a team as they explore and learn about a different theme each year. FLL Challenge team activities include: building a robot and attachments, programming the robot, and working together to conduct research and formulate a solution to a real world problem. FLL Challenge uses LEGO components to build the body and attachments for a “brick” that runs programs to operate motors, color sensors, and touch sensors. Students use software to program actions for the robot to navigate a 4x8 foot mat that has objects to move and obstacles to navigate. The research project involves accessing library and online source materials, talking to experts, and working as a group to come up with a solution for a real world problem. The culmination of the FLL Challenge season is a robotics competition and presentation of the project and team activities to panels of judges, which will be organized with safety and social distancing in mind (likely virtual). The FLL Challenge team spends very little time playing with LEGOs and a lot of time designing and perfecting their robot, coding, brainstorming, building their creativity and teamwork muscles, and learning about how they can engineer their futures.

For the 2020-2021 school year, the FLL Challenge season is titled "RePLAY". Here is a video introducing the theme and Challenge: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IxpXg5J5WdY

Teams consist of 5-10 students and two volunteer coaches. We invite *any* interested Lincoln students ages 9-14 to consider signing up. If you are a kid who likes programming and robots, or a kid who has never tried it but thinks it sounds like fun, we want you on the team! Here is the link for the sign up form for FLL Challenge at Lincoln:  https://forms.gle/NzzuDP1jbd3Bj9Pq7

We are still looking for coaching assistance. Experience working with robotics is not necessary, but coaches should have an abundance of patience and ability to guide the kids in creative thinking and problem solving. Please contact Katherine Bryden as soon as possible if you are interested in coaching or have any questions about the team, time commitments, or other concerns.
