Today, we are going to talk about Nelson Mandela….Nelson Mandela, on this day in 1990, was released from prison after being jailed for 27 years for opposing South Africa’s Apartheid law. Apartheid translates to “apartness”. Mandela was arrested for treason, due to his organization of protest and nonviolence against South African Apartheid. He was sentenced to life in prison and spent nearly 20 years at Robben Island prison, where he lived without a bed or plumbing. In 1989, Apartheid was abolished and Mandela would be released from prison a year later. 3 years after his release, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
