2022 Summer Reading Opportunities

Summer is fast approaching, and we know the best way to prepare kids for the upcoming school year is to keep them reading all summer.  Here is some information about some great programs that will keep your kids reading that won't cost any money and can earn your students some free books!

Cedar Heights Summer Reading

Summer reading is back at Cedar Heights!  Mrs. Ahrens is thrilled to be able to open the library to our current and incoming families this summer.  Come and join us on Tuesday nights for stories, games, and family fun.   Announcements regarding summer reading (including last minute cancellations) will be made on our Cedar Heights Facebook Page.  You can download the flyer for more information below.

Cedar Falls Public Library

The Cedar Falls Public Library will once again host their outstanding summer program.  This year's theme is Read Beyond the Beaten Path.  Kids track their minutes read through Beanstack (information available on the library page), and for every 15 days they read, they earn a free book from the public library.  There are also guest performers putting on programs, crafts, scavenger hunts, storytime programs, and STEAM programs.  This isn't just for kids, either!  Adults and Teens can also sign up for their own programs.  Summer reading can be a total family activity!

MackinVia--I Want to Read

MackinVia is a great free resource offered to us by our AEA.  We currently have a collection of 2,500 ebooks and audiobooks that can be read online or downloaded through the (free) MackinVia app.  The I Want to Read Website offers a reading/writing journal, activities, and ebooks for students to continue reading over the summer.  3rd-6th grade students can log into MackinVia with their Google account information (HelloID QR code).  Students in PK-2 can log in with a username and password from Mrs. Ahrens.  Contact Mrs. Ahrens at Tiffany.Ahrens@cfschools.org for login information.

Barnes and Noble

Students can earn a free book from Barnes & Noble by reading 8 books and logging them on a journal with the title of the books they read and a sentence about their favorite part.  NO PURCHASE NECESSARY! Journals can be picked up at the Waterloo Barnes & Noble store or printed online from the link below.

Bookopolis

Bookopolis is an online reading community for elementary students, and they have a Summer Reading Program.  Students can complete any of the READ-O (Bingo, reading style!) cards for a free book.  You can also join Team Bookopolis and use Bookopolis to log your students' reading minutes or books this summer.  If they read 10 books or 1,000 minutes, they can earn a free book.  This is a fun way to encourage reading and creativity, as well as allowing students to participate in a safe online community of other readers.
