Summer Reading Opportunities For Families

Summer is fast approching, and we know that the best way to prepare kids for the upcoming school year is to keep them reading all summer. Here is some information about some great summer reading programs that you kids can do that won't cost any money and could earn your students some pretty cool prizes!

Cedar Heights Summer Reading

We will still be having Summer Reading at Cedar Heights, it's just going to be a bit different this year. We are going to have checkout by email request and outdoor storytimes on Tuesday evenings. We hope you can come and join us for some reading fun (and we hear that Baby Joy may make a few guest appearances too!). In the event of rain or bad weather we will have our story times via Zoom. Announcements regarding summer reading will be made on our Cedar Heights Facebook Page. You can download the flyer below for more information:Summer Reading 2021.pdf

Cedar Falls Public Library

The Cedar Falls Public Library will once again host their outstanding summer program. Due to COVID-19, the program is going to look and function just a little bit differently.  Instead of earning free books for library visits, students are able to earn free books by logging their minutes through Beanstack, an online site or app.  Kids can earn up to 3 free books just by logging their minutes!  The library also has a great list of virtual shows and storytimes for you to participate in.  And there may be a trophy for the school with the most participants... Click on the link above to get the information.

MackinVia--I Want to Read

MackinVia is a great free resource offered to us by our AEA.  We currently have a collection of about 1,500 eBooks and audiobooks that can be read online or dowloaded through the (free) MackinVia app.  The I Want to Read website offers reading/writing journal, activities, and ebooks for students to continue reading over the summer.  Contact Mrs. Ahrens for the login information to MackinVia, if your student doesn't remember.MackinVIA Summer Reading.pdf

Barnes and Noble

Students earn a free book by reading and filling out the reading journal online.  NO PURCHASE NECESSARY!  Journals can be acquired at B&N Store, or printed online from the link below.Barnes and Noble Summer Reading.pdf

Waterloo Bucks

The Waterloo Bucks are celebrating readers again this year! Watch the video linked above for details. For every 25 minutes you read, have a grown up initial the baseball. Take the card to the Bucks main office to claim your prizes.Waterloo Reading Scorecard 2021-2.pdf

Scholastic Summer Reading

Scholastic is once again offering their summer reading program. By signing up for an account with Home Base students can join an online reading community, read books and stories, participate in special author events, and play games. By participating in the Scholastic program, students can earn books to be donated to communities in need.Scholastic Summer Reading Information.pdfScholastic Home Base Information and Instructions.pdf

We will keep you posted on any other programs that we find over the summer. We hope you have a great summer of reading!!
