Schools are for learning. Whatever interferes with that goal is the counselor's number one concern!
The Counseling Program at Orchard Hill Elementary is part of the total school program and complements learning in the classroom. It is child-centered, preventative, and developmental. The program encourages students' social, emotional, and personal growth at each stage of their development so that they may achieve academic success. The counseling program supports the mission of the Cedar Falls Community Schools which is to educate each student to be a life long learner and a caring responsible citizen.
The purpose of the program is to address the developmental needs of all students, as well as, provide additional support to students with specific needs.
The counselor works with students in many different ways. The counselor teachers guidance lessons; facilitates small groups; counsels individuals; consults with parents, teachers, and other professional; and coordinates many student and family services within the school. School counselors are also a valuable resource for parents and can help families make contacts with organizations within the community. Mr. Berns also serves on committees at the building and district level and in the local community.
The school counselor teaches classroom lessons with each grade level throughout the school year. The classroom teachers and the counselor work together to implement the comprehensive counseling curriculum. The counseling curriculum is based on the District Elementary Counseling Standards and the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) Standards which focus on personal/social, academic and career development. These lessons are also connected to the 21st Century Skills from the Iowa Core Curriculum.
