Name: Mr. David Berns, MAE (pronounced Bearns like the Bearnstain bears)
Family: My wife, Kathy, and I have two children (Michael and Andrea). I enjoy spending time with my family.
Years at Orchard Hill: This is my 19th year as counselor at Orchard Hill, but I have been a counselor for 25 years. Before I was a counselor I was a classroom teacher for 4 years.
Degrees: I received my Master’s Degree in School Counseling (MAE) from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. I did my undergraduate work at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.
Favorite exercise/activities: I am an avid exerciser. Besides running and working out I enjoy baseball, basketball and football. I also enjoy bike riding and going for walks. I also enjoy traveling and reading.
Favorite hobby: playing the piano / organ. I am music minister at St. Edward Parish in Waterloo and play the piano / organ for Sunday Masses, weddings and other liturgical services. I also provide entertainment for receptions, luncheons, and other social events. Orchard Hill students also know that I enjoy doing magic tricks.
Favorite learning tip: studying 4 different times for 15 minutes is better than studying once for an hour. Take things one step at a time. Plan ahead and break large assignments down into smaller parts.
Other fun information: I have recorded three CD albums of solo piano music.
