Thanks to a grant from the Closson and Bunger family, an elementary summer reading program has expanded. Students from North Cedar Elementary School will now be able to join Cedar Heights Elementary students at the "Dalton and Gabe's Super Readers of Summer" program, which kicked off Tuesday June 6th at Cedar Heights Elementary School. Students will also be given a free book, purchased with funds from the grant. The Closson family is hoping to expand the program in the future, to include all seven Cedar Falls elementary schools.

Kathy Bunger’s daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Bob Closson, and Kathy's husband Sid Bunger, directed a very generous grant to the Cedar Falls Schools Foundation to support and grow this program in Kathy’s memory. Before her passing in 2013, Kathy was very involved with support for cancer patients and raised money and awareness for cancer research and education. She believed that to truly be successful, one should always give back to others, a legacy being continued by her family.

The Cedar Falls Schools Foundation thanks Shannon and Bob Closson and Sid Bunger for this impactful gift. Through collaborative work with Cedar Heights Elementary librarian Tiffany Ahrens, North Cedar Elementary librarian Darla Striegel, North Cedar principal Jen Hartman, Cedar Heights principal Brian Ortman, the Cedar Falls Community Foundation and the Cedar Falls Community School District, our youngest students will have the opportunity to see their classmates while reading and learning throughout the summer.

All Cedar Falls elementary students are welcome to attend the program, although only Cedar Heights and North Cedar Elementary students will be able to check books out. Program dates for this summer are Tuesday evenings, June 6, 13, 20, July 11, 25, August 1, 8, 15 from 6:00-8:00 p.m., all at Cedar Heights Elementary. A bus will be available for North Cedar Elementary students each of those evenings, due to construction at North Cedar School.
